Fly fishing has been around and has been popular since the 1800’s when the first American fishers visited brooks, streams, rivers and lakes or Colonial America. Fake flies (lures or bait) are used by today’s fisher to replicate the movement and look of aquatic insects or small fish such as minnows. Fly lines today are covered with plastic and are sufficiently heavy to keep winds from blowing the lures out of the water. Other types of fishing use bait or spinner rods and heavier weights. Fly fishing lures remain on top of or just under a few inches of water. The fish are still lured to the top to be able to snag the fake flies!

In olden days, fly fishing was the main method of angling and was used to snare trout and salmon only. Today, bass, grayling, carp, pike and pan fish are often the ‘catches of the day’ when fly fishermen and women head to the rivers, brooks and lakes.

Anglers love to fly fish in saltwater or freshwater. In cold freshwater, fishers snag trout, salmon and steelhead. Cool water fly fishing will yield pike, perch or walleye. In warm water, catfish, chub or bass are the ‘catches of the day’ for fly fishing aficionados. Sometimes trout fly fishers unintentionally catch bream, chub or rudd.

Fly fishing lures have a lot of different distinctions which include weight, color and size. The lures are made by tying feathers, hair, fur or other synthetic or natural material to a hook with some string or thread. In the past, fly lures were tied with natural materials to include horsehair or wool but are now affixed with synthetic fishing wires and plastic twines.

Usually fishing flies designs are either ‘attractors’ or ‘imitators’. The imitators will mislead fish through a very real imitation of baits or insects on which these fish will feed. These imitation flies don’t have to always look exactly like the insects or bait, their furs and feathers look like the ‘real thing’ when deep underwater. Additionally, the imitation flies when underwater move with the current to defraud the fish into thinking they are living creatures.

‘Imitators’ are fly fishing lures that are formulated to look like the actual baits and lures of the fish they are intended to attract. Some of the imitators look like the insects or the minnows of the region. Although the imitators don’t sometimes look identical to the natural baits, their motion in the water will deceive the fish enough to get them to bite!

Customarily, the fly species most imitated as a prey include the aquatic insects: Stoneflies, Caddis flies and Mayflies. These 3 aquatic fly species are the traditional fly fishing lures since the 1800’s when this became a popular sport.

If you’re serious about landing a big one, then you need a proven and tested carp fishing bait. Bringing in one of these big fighters can be a thrill you never forget. People fish for them all the time just for that reason. They aren’t popular for eating and most people shy away from it. But some people know that if you cut out the mud-line, which is an orange line down either side of the meat, you can eat a carp.

As far as bait goes, there are three main baits that we small town anglers have proven year after year to catch the big carp. In a small town like mine, we had nothing much else to do for entertainment but fish, so it’s just part of our lifestyle. We soon learned what types of bait were best for whatever type of fish we were after on that particular day.

The first good bait I want to share with you is what we call a ‘dough ball’. It’s made from ‘Shredded Wheat’, which is a cereal we ate growing up. You simply take one of the shredded wheat biscuits and dip it under the water, and then start mashing and molding it into a round ball. It may take a couple of dunks to get it right, but when you finish you have a round ball that will hold together fine in the water. Then sink your hook into the center until you can’t see it, and cast it out. The big carp really love these things.

Most any angler, experienced or not, knows that worms are good fish bait. But the truth is, different worms are best for different types of fish. You have night crawlers, wigglers, stripers, and red-worms that all have their place and can be used for carp too. But I’ve found that the best worms for carp are green-worms. These worms can be found in the dark mud along the riverbank that looks like big cracked mud slabs. Trust me, you’ll catch more carp with these than you will with any other type worms.

Growing up in the small town I’m from, carp fishing was a regular activity. Me and my friends all learned at an early age what a thrill it is to haul in one of these big fighters. They get really big in this area. We normally caught six pounders on up to twenty pounders. But once in a while somebody would land a big thirty pounder, and this was big news. This was the goal we all had set in mind, the thirty pounder.

The third bait is nothing more than canned corn from the supermarket. You just load a kernel at a time on the hook until it’s covered. It can be a challenge to get one to stay on and cover the end of your hook, but it CAN be done. I can’t tell you how many carp have been caught on corn. I can personally vouch for all three of these carp baits because I’ve used them since I was a small boy and had great success with them.

You now have the advantage of using proven and tested carp fishing bait to get ahead of your fishing buddies. Sneak some of these into your tackle box and use them when nobody’s looking. They’ll soon come sniffing around to see what you’re using to bring in the big carp. But you don’t have to tell them

Most people, when looking at various fish finders, base their final decision on two factors. The first is their need. Do they need one that can chart and plot their GPS position and is highly sophisticated? Or do they need a simple fish finder that covers the basics? The second is price. While some people can afford to pay a couple grand for a fish finder, some cannot afford that amount. For those who want a good fish finder at a reasonable price, the Garmin Fishfinder 140 may be the perfect solution.

Chances are pretty good that you have heard the Garmin name. They are one of the leaders in GPS technology. So going over to fish finders is not a great leap. The Garmin Fishfinder 140 is one of the most basic models Garmin produces but it still does have a lot to offer. With the ability to narrow or widen the field of coverage for the bottom terrain and preset alarms for certain fish sizes, it does make it a good fish finder. You can also see the depth of the water and the temperature.

The downside of the Garmin 140 would have to be its display. It’s the old fashioned monochrome screen that was utilized years ago. Plus, it doesn’t provide you with the ability to GPS your position so you can come back to the same spot. It also does not feature pre-loaded maps of different rivers or lakes that might be in your vicinity.

But those problems may be okay in view of the price. This model is relatively economical and you can find it for around $100 if you look on the Amazon or Target websites.

The Garmin Fishfinder 140 may be a basic model and be inexpensive but there is one major gripe. Garmin does not include the mounting hardware or the screen cover. If you want to have those two very important pieces, then you have to pay extra. So in reality the price goes up to the $150 mark. It still is considered cheap but you should not have to pay extra for mounting hardware and screen covers.

No doubt, Alaska is one of the most popular places where fishermen can expect to catch a record number of salmon fish. Cool water of rivers, lakes and oceans in the western part of the state are well known for the availability of high quality salmon in large quantities.

Activities include golfing, sunbathing, water sports and deep sea fishing. Golfers can choose between two excellent courses: Palma Real Golf and Tennis Club, and Marina Ixtapa Golf Club. Ixtapa continues to be very popular for sport fishing large and small game fish. Main game fishing consists of sailfish, marlin, and rooster fish. The town offers a number of excellent boat charters and equipment providers. Local fishing captains are well known for their expertise in finding prime fishing spots along the coast.

Most memorable are Ixtapa’s beaches, ranging from those in protected bays for swimmers and snorkelers, to beaches with open-water and waves ideal for surfers. Some of the most popular are Playa El Palmar, Playa Linda, and Ixtapa Island. Scuba Diving and snorkeling off the Ixtapa beaches is ideal, as the area is part of the southwestern coastal plain, which contains volcanic rock and marine sediment. There are over fifty popular dive sites, along with numerous certified dive schools offering all levels of training along with equipment to ensure safe and entertaining dives. The most popular snorkeling sites are located at Playa Las Gatas, and Ixtapa Island.

Ixtapa is only five minutes from the quaint Mexican village of Zihuatanejo. Visitors can easily split their time between both places. The combined locales provide an abundance of first class restaurants and a huge variety of shopping. Zihuatanejo has lovely seaside cafes, markets selling local crafts, and a picturesque promenade by the sea, contrasted by Ixtapa’s contemporary sophistication.

In general single frequency fish finders are adequate for freshwater fishing. Single frequency fish finders work well in most lakes, rivers and in shallow coastal fishing and they are generally less expensive. Single frequency fish finders have less depth penetration than dual frequency models, but for freshwater that is generally acceptable. Most freshwater fishing is not in deep water so being able to see to depths of 1000 feet or more is not needed. The single frequency fish finders will often have a larger cone angle which will let you see a broader area at a more shallow depth.

If you happen to fish in the Great Lakes or other very deep lakes or rivers then a dual frequency fish finder will serve you better. The dual frequency settings will allow you greater visibility at deeper depth and overall deeper depth penetration.

Another aspect of freshwater fishing to consider when choosing a fish finder is what type of craft you use for fishing. Many people use kayaks, float tubes, canoes or small boats when fishing in freshwater. If you use one of these smaller crafts you should consider a portable fish finder. If you are selecting a fish finder for freshwater fishing, consider the water depth and type of craft you usually use. Unless you are fishing in truly deep water, like the Great Lakes, you can often get great results from some of the more inexpensive models. If you are in the market for your first fish finder then you may want to start with a simpler model and trade up to the more advanced models as you gain experience with finding fish easily.
